Part I: Passion For Fitness!

Hey, all!  I hope you are doing well.  I have been in a very reflective mood lately.  To be 100% honest, I have been a little down.  I own two personal training gyms in Davis County, Utah, and one of them is closing soon.  Over the past few days, I have felt a myriad of emotions, and I can’t help but think that better days lie ahead.

I have learned much, and I plan on taking what I have learned and applying them in the present moment and in the future.  I can honestly say that that last year of my life–and the last month in particular– has been the hardest period of my life.  I believe that things happen for a reason, and I am now taking a back seat and letting life do the teaching.  I know that all of this will teach me, refine me, and coax me into the person that I am supposed to be.

You may be asking, “Yeah, well, that is nice, Griff, but what does that have to do with health and fitness?”  I am glad you asked, my friend!  I have drawn many parallels from my recent trials to lifestyle change.  The benefit of these parallels is that they resonate with pretty much everybody. We all have trials, adversity, and downright crappy days.  I have noticed that three key elements have saved my sanity, hope, and ambition through my adversities. These elements directly influence a successful lifestyle change. The first key element is passion.

First Key Element:  Passion

I have dealt with angry clients, low bottom lines, worry about payroll, and a laundry list of other things. I assure you that 99% of them are not pleasant.  There are some days that I feel like the very life is getting sucked out of me. All of you business owners have probably experienced something similar!

I often ask myself what continues to drive me towards my goal.  The answer that I always come to is passion.  I have a passion for what I do.  I have a passion for the people I serve, and I have a passion for helping people change their lifestyle for the better.  I have a passion for my vision/mission, and I certainly have a passion for exercise and nutrition and the benefits that they bring.

How it relates to lifestyle change:

I have worked with many clients who begin an exercise program, only to last for a couple of weeks.  They then regress to their sedentary ways and unhealthy eating habits.  The reason this happens is because they lack a PASSION for living a healthy lifestyle.  This is where the chicken and the egg paradox come into play.  Science has revealed that if we exercise consistently for 6 months that we will not go back to our old ways.  Part of this is physiological, and the other part is psychological.

Right now, I hate having to deal with the situation that I am faced with. That is no lie.  The fact remains that I still have a burning, unstoppable, and insatiable passion for what I do and the mission that I am trying to perpetrate.  This drives me despite the crap that I have to deal with.

The same holds true with fitness and nutrition.  Are asking yourself how to get that passion if you don’t already have it?  Good question, my friend!  The best way to gain a passion for something that you don’t naturally have a passion for is this:  you associate health and fitness with something else in your life that you are very passionate about.  Say, for example, you are passionate about your wife, husband, or significant other.  In this case, you would begin your fitness program with THEM in mind!

It may surprise you that you are NOT initially doing it for YOU. This is a common misconception that you “have to do it for yourself.”  Don’t get me wrong. Ultimately, it is all about you, but if you are trying to build a passion for something that you don’t have a passion for, you have to “borrow” passion from another area of your life.  Use this passion to drive you.  Remember this: there is not ONE area of your life that is not affected by your health and fitness–not one!  So if you love accounting, it’s affected; if you love your spouse and your relationships with your kids, those are affected too!

No matter how you slice it, the passions that you have in life are currently affected by your health and fitness.  You can justify and excuse yourself until you are blue in the face, saying, “I would workout, but I need to spend time with my family.”  That is true, but logically not used in full context.  Instead, reason with yourself that since you are passionate about your family that you owe it to them to eat nutritiously and keep yourself fit.  The magic is that if you use this logic as your catalyst, you will eventually gain a passion for fitness itself. The passion for fitness will blend naturally and effortlessly with the passion that you currently have for your family or with whatever passion you are using.

I am grateful for the passion that I have for health and fitness and the passion that I have for spreading the word! I hope you will apply these principles so that they can work for you in your life. I urge you to find your own passion for fitness and to cultivate it through the current passions that you have in your life.  Life is good my friends!

God Bless,

Griff
