“Super charge your metabolism!”

I always get a kick how the fitness industry paints the picture of human metabolism as though it is a engine to your favorite sports car that can be “charged” up at will with a fine assortment of hacks that range from the highest priced supplements and the latest “super-food”

But is this really possible?  And what is the real definition of “metabolism” anyway? 

When we say “metabolism” what we essentially are referring to is a highly intricate collection of biological processes that include the following:



-Mitochondria (the part of your cell that gives you energy)


-EVERY bodily organ

I know, I know it seems a little bit complicated but let me make it super simple for you.  Metabolism basically boils down to this…

Metabolism happens when your body takes one form of energy (air, food, and water) and transforms it into another usable form of energy that allows you to move your body!

So when we say that we are “revving our metabolism” or when we indicate that we have a “fast metabolism” or “slow metabolism” what we are essentially saying is that our body has the RESOURCES to take food, air and water and quickly (or not so quickly) transform it into a usable form of energy.

So what are the “resources” that you need to ensure a metabolism?

#1: Switch from processed foods to WHOLE foods.

Well that is exactly what I want to talk to you about today!  Below I will quickly go over 4 ways that you can help your metabolism become maximally effective.

This is the single most powerful thing that you can do to increase the effectiveness of your metabolism.

Think about it. Your metabolism is 100% dependent of what you feed yourself because your hormones, enzymes and other components of your metabolism (see list above) are MADE from the foods that you eat! If you are eating processed foods that are devoid of naturally occurring enzymes then how would you expect to be able to make the enzymes that your body needs to promote a healthy metabolism? This is just basic math….2+2=4 and you cannot make something from the thin air that processed foods give you. Trust me foods is so much more than just calories…it literally becomes every cell of your body.

If you ever get confused as to what a “whole food” is, just ask yourself if it was made in nature and it if it has anything ADDED to it or SUBTRACTED from it.

#2: Get Optimal Sleep

This one may surprise you but make no mistake about it this one is absolutely HUGE! Your metabolism get’s crippled when you do not get enough sleep and to make matters worse you will get cravings out the wazoo that will hamper your efforts to eat whole foods in moderation.

Notice that I did not say get “adequate” sleep or “just enough sleep”, I said OPTIMAL sleep which means 7-8 hours per night. Oh….and don’t be tempted fall into the conventional nonsense that says, “well everybody is so much different with sleep needs.” That is actually not true. While there is some variation within humans there is not much. The science is pretty clear on this and we need at least 7 hours per night to help our body recover and boost that metabolism into a health range.

#3: Add in Weight Training!

Weight training more than any other modality (sorry endurance enthusiasts) will keep your metabolism healthy and vibrant. Why? Because resistance training is unique in that it consistently pushes your body past its own comfort zone (homeostasis) and forces it to adapt metabolically. It’s as if your body is saying, “WOW…what what that? I am not used to lifting that much weight and it feels like a threat to me! Better make sure that I am utilizing every nutritional and hormonal resource that I have (metabolism) to make sure I am strong enough for the next time that happens!

I would encourage you to look into the scientific literature here because it is blatantly obvious that there is not a better stimulus on the planet for turning a lazy metabolism into a super star shred machine.

#4: Hydrate Up!

It blows my mind that we don’t consider water to be a “metabolic booster” when you consider that fact that EVERY METABOLIC REACTION in the human body requires a water medium to operate effectively. Here at Lifelong Fitness we will typically start our nutrition coaching clients on proper water intake because it is such an effective and easy way to not only boost your metabolic health but also clear our dangerous toxins that are also impeding a healthy metabolism.

As a quick reference take in half of your bodyweight in ounces. So for example, if you are 200 lbs take in 100 ounces of water daily. Simple and effective and you you will be amazed at how much better you feel. Oh and water means water…I am not taking about any other beverage…sorry! 😉
