Why is Long-Term Change So HARD?
I once coached a senior level executive that I shall call Mike. At the time Mike needed to lose 50 lbs to get back into a healthy weight range. As most senior level executives, Mike shouldered a very high workload and rarely had time to catch his breath.
Mike is a classic people pleaser. When I first started to meet with him I learned very quickly that he would always consent to my homework assignments along with a convincing case that he was going to follow through. In the beginning I left our sessions feeling hopeful that he was going to make change.
My first assignment for Mike was to drink more water and he actually hit that one out of the park.
Then came the sugar…
Seeing Mikes initial progress with the water I was more than confident that I could get him to stop his sugar addiction. “After all” I told myself…”I am an expert in sugar addiction so this should be easy”
