One of the major themes of my coaching over my 20+ year career is the starting point with my clients.
The starting point is the place in time where the client steps into my office with inspiration coming out of their eyes and ears. They are brimming with a high desire to change their habits.
When we first begin speaking about their goals they are highly optimistic. They freely throw around statements such as, “I will don anything that you tell me to do Griff…really…you tell me what to do and I will do it!”
But Then Reality Sets In…
But soon enough their lightness, inspiration and zeal slowly gets replaced with the heaviness of life that takes them over and I then start to hear statements like, “Well, I wanted to prepare my food but then I had to work overtime so that threw my plans”.
Life seems to “happen” and we slowly find ourselves slithering out of the commitments that we made to ourselves. We revert to old habits and we resolve ourselves to our old ways. We get frustrated and reason to ourselves that we will try again when “life slows down”.
What Obstacles Are Standing In Your Way?
Today I want you to be honest with yourself and when I say honest I want you to be 100% honest!
What obstacles are standing in your way from being in the best shape of your life?
Let’s start out with the physical. Do you have physical obstacles that are standing in your way? Do you have joint issues, pain issues or excessive weight that is preventing you from taking action? I want you to write all of these down on a piece of paper….ALL of them!
Now lets go to the mental/emotional side of things. What limiting thoughts that you have that are preventing you from taking better care of yourself? Are you telling yourself that you don’t have enough time? Are you telling yourself that you lack the will-power?
What emotions are you experiencing when it comes to your health and fitness? If you are not taking care of yourself then chances are very good that your emotions are negative. When you think of “having” to take care of your health & fitness needs it likely feels heavy and burdensome. Be honest with yourself and write down the dominant emotions that you feel when you think about what it takes to get in the best shape of your life.
Next I want you to address the spiritual barriers. What Griff? Spiritual barriers? What does that have to do with my health and fitness?
Without going into detail whether you are religious, or spiritual (or both) if you are not attending to your spiritual needs then it will be almost impossible to attend your physical needs as well. Without dictating what is “spiritual” for you I would invite you to take inventory of whether you feel like you are spiritually rooted or not. If you feel like this area needs attention please do not take it for granted!
Come Up With a Plan To Dismantle Your Barriers!
Now that you have gotten your barriers written down you need to come up with a plan to systematically dismantle your barriers. It is beyond the scope of this article to give you a detailed plan because your plan is unique to you.
My advice is to look at your physical barriers and ask what needs to be done? Do you need to hire a Physical Therapist, or a Personal Trainer so that you can overcome these barriers? When it comes to the mental/emotional do you need to hire a coach, a therapist or simply MOVE more so that your brain chemistry regulates better (yes exercise is medicine). What about the spiritual?
Take some introspective time to identity your barriers and then systematically come up with a plan to take your life to the next level.
I can promise you that if you do this correctly that it will change your life. It takes a lot of personal honesty and integrity to make this happen but it will certainly be worth it.
Please COMMENT here because I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences.
